CubeVitational 2010 Winner Tijs de Kler, shown here on archive footage, drafted his beloved Grixis'ish Control deck today. Although he agonized over passing Nicol Bolas Planeswalker, he did manage to ace the 3rd Qualifier to claim his seat for the 2012 edition!

Congrats to Johan! He answers his abscense from the CubeVitaional 2011 with claiming the first spot for next years's edition.

Monday November 7th we will kick-off the CubeVitational 2012 Qualifiers. Starting next week we will have a monthly Qualifier. That's right! All monday night 2 Klaveren Cube Drafts are now Qualifiers. They will run all the way through to next summer. Feeding the CubeVitational 2012, which once again is planned for September, with 11 spots.

The last Qualifier for this year's CubeVitational is in the books and I must say that I almost could't have been happier with the way this last Qualifier played out, for several reasons. But first:

So why does this result make me happy?
Well, not only did someone win who wasn't already Qualified, it was Dutch super-Judge Teun Zijp! He battled his way through two other would be Qualifiers and he did so using an RB Land Destruction Deck, playing cards like Stone Rain maindeck. Which brings me to another reason I'm happy: I have been pushing this mechanic a bit and failed to draft good decks with it myself. Teun however crushed yesterday's Qualifier with ease on the back of powerhouses like Smokestack and Yawgmoth's Will. He even ran Rise//Fall. Furthermore, there were almost no Blue cards in the top4 and that seems like a good sign to me, considering all the work I've put into the Cube since most top4's comprised mostly of Blue cards. Okay, I admit some degree of Blue cards in yesterday's top4 might have been more balanced, but still I'm happy that deck like RB and BG are back to posting reseults. I'll stop my gushing now...

Congrats to Teun. I hope that things work out and that he'll be able to attend CubeVitational 2011 next saturday.

Which leads me to the last four Invites to CubeVitational 2011 that are to be given away. I have decided to use half these Invites to extend the Rating Cut. As such two of these invites will be awarded to Peter and Jan. Jan lost his second (or third?) Qualifier Final yesterday so I'm glad that his good results overall still alliow me to Qualify him. The other two Invites will be for Quirijn, my longtime Magicbuddy, and myself, since I've failed to win a Qualifier and did away with the lopsided Ranking system.

Losing the finals is never fun... However Jan can take comfort in the fact that a win over Tijs wouldn't have given him enough rating for the rating cut. Jan comes in fifth at the moment, while before him Peter narrowly missed out due to Floris' win last week.
After tonight's draft it's clear that Mattias, Elmer and Floris are Qualified on rating. Congratulations!

Two new faces, Jamie and Maarten, and some people that hadn't played in a while battled it out for the 7th Qualifier seat.
Jamie and Maarten were introduced via BeNeLegacy and as a result I had 13 applications.
After tonight's Qualifier more than half the people Qualified for CubeVitational 2011 will known.

Aaaaand we're back!

Summer approaches fast and so does The CubeVitational 2011, after tonight only two Qualifiers left.
After last month's 2HG Event we were back in old form with an 8man. Floris had completely forgotten but lucky for us (and him;) Tijs' friend, Michael, wanted to try his hand some Cube.

First timer Michael did a smart thing and built a straight-up awesome monoRed deck, as he didn't know what to expect from my Cube.
Tight play netted him the invite as sixth Qualifier for The CubeVitational 2011. Congrats!
I'm especially happy with his deck considering the time spent and the number of updates towards upgrading Red as a color.

Some of my veteran-Cube-attendees had been clamoring for another 2HG event for some time now and because I want to accomodate my playerbase I complied, of course. I started out simply wanting to Qualify the winning team for the CubeVitational 2011 since I had never used anything besides normal draft as a Qualifier format, but I'm still me so I also tried something slightly different: A 2HG League!

Six two player teams would draft the Cube at one table, afterwhich each team would play each team once during a five round tournament. We drafted five 18 card packs to ensure a bit of wheeling, maybe next time I will use four packs instead, not sure. Also, I tried to use Swiss pairing as long as possible to keep the pairings exciting.

It turned out quite nice: The eventual winners drew against the last team in the standings, two teams were still gunning for the crown in the last round, stuff you want to happen in a league. We also managed most games within the timeframe alotted for the matches. I kind of liked the fact that league play made draws possible, but maybe a bit more time per round could prevent the two draws we saw. That could be a pipedream however as Cube-2HG games tend to be well playable within 45 minutes...
