Condemn: What Does It Do?

January 28, 2010 · 1 Comment

Every other draft you can hear somebody shout: "Condemn? Power or Toughness?" You might think that question is easily answered... Just read the card. Well, that can be a tough feat to accomplish if a card is textless, which is the case with my Cube's Condemn. So here you have it to settle this once and for all: Swords to Plowshares checks Power, Condemn checks Toughness.

Forcefield: Not Very Good in 2HG

January 26, 2010 · No Comments

Oracle Wording: 1: The next time target unblocked creature would deal combat damage to you this turn, prevent all but 1 of that damage.

806.7f As the combat damage step begins, the active team announces how each attacking creature will assign its combat damage. If an attacking creature would assign combat damage to the defending team, the active team chooses only one of the defending players for that creature to assign its combat damage to. Then the defending team announces how each blocking creature will assign its combat damage. See rule 510.1.

In short: The attacking team will choose the player not controlling the Forcefield to assign combat damage to, if they're smart. That way the Forcefield doesn't work because its controller is not assigned combat damage.

Lifelink vs. Old Wording

January 21, 2010 · 3 Comments

With the launch of M10 Lifelink has become a static ability. Why do we care? Because now the lifegain doesn't stack anymore. Put more simply, a creature can have only one instance of Lifelink. So you don't gain double the life if your man has double Lifelink. This is relevant for the Cube because some cards aren't errata'd. So it is still possible to gain double amounts of life!

It's actually really simple. If a card has been reprinted using the term Lifelink, it obviously has Lifelink. But if it isn't reprinted with Lifelink it will still be a triggered abililty. The only card that will confuse people when using my Cube is Loxodon Warhammer. My Cube is running the Mirrodin version, with old wording.

Cards with Lifelink:
Baneslayer Angel, Felidar Sovereign, Vampire Nighthawk, Brion Stoutarm & Loxodon Warhammer.

Cards with old wording, and triggered ability by default:
Exalted Angel, Phantom Nishoba & Armadillo Cloak.

Armadillo Cloak on Baneslayer Angel is double lifegain. (one triggered, one static)
Loxodon Warhammer on Felidar Sovereign isn't. (two static)
Loxodon Warhammer on Phantom Nishoba is double lifegain. (one static, one triggered)
Armadillo Cloak on Exalted Angel is also double lifegain. (two triggered)

However, please keep in mind that you can still lose the game with an 'old-wording-trigger' on the stack!

Mindslaver: The Nuts in 2HG

January 21, 2010 · No Comments

806.6h. [...] If an effect causes a player to control another player's turn, the controller of that effect controls the affected player's team's turn.

Yes indeed, your eyes aren't deceiving you! Mindslaver went from utter 2HG trash to being a bonkers-nuts-high-five-giving-windmill-slammer! Great stuff...

Frits from The Gamekeeper was generous to donate a foil Lotus Cobra for the Cube, which replaced Joiner Adept. But that's not all! He also donated 8 Russian Ravnica boosters as prizes.

Daan crushed the opposition in this first Qualifier using his UG control-ramp deck. Thomas' MonoRed burn was the only deck capable of stealing a game, but after that Daan beat Mattias' BW midrange and Balthasar's Rock to claim the first seat for the 2k10 CubeVitational.

Daan 3-0

Balthasar 2-1

Mattias 2-1

Hylke 2-1

Congrats to Daan for securing the first seat for the CubeVitanional 2k10!

Welcome!

January 14, 2010 · No Comments

Hello and welcome to tapintothecube.com!

The old site is still accesible through mtgcube.googlepages.com,but no new content will be posted there.

Which brings me to the first order of business for the new site: The CubeVitational 2K10 Announcement.

This year will be home to the first Tap Into The Cube Championship 2010 (TITC-2K10). For that reason I have published an ELO rating (TITC rating) for everyone that has ever taken part in a Cube draft, using my Cube. The TITC-2K10 Championship will be played with twelve players in December 2010. They will be seated by TITC rating at two tables of 6, as such the whole Cube will be drafted. These twelve men play 5 rounds of Swiss followed by a Top 4.

The first six seats will be given to the six winners of six Qualifiers. The next five seats will be given to five people with the most season points, not already placed through a Qualifier. The twelfth and final seat will be awarded by the organization.

The Qualifiers are normal 8man drafts that will take place in the odd months (January, March, May, July, September and November). Invites for these Qualifiers will be provided to anyone who already played a Cube Draft. Players allowed to participate in a certain Qualifier are determined through a weighted lottery. For the first qualifier anyone who signs up will receive one ticket, someone that doesn't draw in will get an extra ticket for the next qualifier, this method will persist until the last qualifier in November. If this method doesn't provide an even number of opportunities to play in Qualifiers for all people I will divide invites evenly. People that already have won a Qualifier are excluded from further Qualifiers, unless the Qualifier won't fill otherwise. They can, however, compete in normal Cubedrafts in the even months or non-Qualifiers in the odd months. If someone wins a second Qualifier, the other finalist will earn the invite to the 2K10 CubeVitational. The k-value of an 8man Qualifier is 24k, normal 8mans will be 16k. For team formats I will consider the individual performance. Played a Rochester and you lost, while your team won? Too bad. 2HG is unrated for now.

Season points are awarded for all 8man drafts during the 2010 Season. Three points for attending a draft, plus 3 for each match win. As always, participation in the Club is for free. The CubeVitational Top4 may sign an Unhinged basic land with their name, finished place and TITC edition, making the finalists of that year part of the Cube forever.

The first two 8man Qualifiers will be held on January 18th and March 15th 2010 @ the 2 Klaveren, 19h30, as usual. I look forward to accepting your registrations for the first Qualifier in January. Please send your registration to thom.krone@gmail.com. Good luck drawing in and winning!
